Kara stared at her sister in shock, “What?”

Alex grimaced before glancing over to the man she’d called in due to this situation. Maxwell Lord folded his arms across his chest and studied her, and she couldn’t exactly read his expression. Despite all her years of training, all she could seem to read of him were a hint of disbelief or shock, but he seemed mostly calm with the news unlike her sister. Kara stood gapping at her, her arms folding around herself, as if to shield herself from the news. She knew Kara hadn’t ever expected this to happen – especially this way – they didn’t even know if humans and Kryptonians could reproduce together (although Eliza had theorized they could indeed which why Kara and Clark had always used protection). Alex knew how much Kara wanted a family – and that this was going to probably break her.

“Well, Max is your kid. Both of yours.” Alex stated again handing Maxwell the tablet with the results when his arm reached out to her, “I’ve ran the DNA results at least ten times, and with what J’onn was able to glimpse from Max’s mind, it’s true – all he knows is that you two are his parents, and I’m his aunt. He’s a healthy boy of five years old, no known genetic defects and seems to be half-human, half-Kryptonian, although he doesn’t seem to have any of Kara’s abilities – from what we know of Superman’s abilities – they seemed to have gradually emerged as he grew older, so we might have to reassess if Max shows any signs. I just don’t know if he’s from an alternate universe or from the future. J’onn believes that it might have been an alternate universe, from the glimpses he got but he’s so young that I’m not sure if we could trust his memories.”

Kara wanted to cry so badly, but she held it in. She needed to be strong right now; she couldn’t break down in front of Maxwell Lord. A thousand questions filled her mind as she listened to her sister. How could this happen? How did a version of her and Maxwell Lord have a kid together? Did they love each other? Were they married? Were they happy? Why was Max here? What happened to them that they would abandon their son here?

“How did he get here? We wouldn’t have just abandoned him,” Maxwell stated firmly, bringing their attention to him. He didn’t glance at Kara, he wasn’t sure what he would see but he knew her well enough by now that she wasn’t going to take this well. Knew that if this alternate version of them had something together – loved each other and their son – they would never have abandoned him. He would never abandon his child, not that he ever had a kid but he made that promise long ago he wouldn’t. And he knew Kara would never have abandoned her kid – he couldn’t picture that ever happening, in any universe.

“From J’onn gathered, it looked like the universe was dying – or something was killing it. The skies were red, and his parents – well, his parents told him that they loved him and said goodbye. That’s all he remembers from the last day there until he wakes up in the ship where you found him.” Alex explained, “I think they did the same thing Kara’s and Superman’s parents did – they protected him the only way they knew how. Only instead of a different planet, they somehow got it travel to another universe.”

Kara did start to cry at that, memories of her own parents saying goodbye – of seeing her planet dying – knowing that she’d never see them again. It had to have been something dire there for her to turn to that solution – of leaving her child alone. Of letting him experience the same painful life that she lived without her parents – her family. When arms wrap themselves around her, Kara did the only thing she could, she pulled the body closer and buried her face into their chest and it was only as she smelled the hint of cologne that she realized it must have been Maxwell. At that moment, she didn’t care that he was the one that was holding her. The only thing that mattered was they weren’t alone in this.

“Mommy! Daddy!”

The little boy ran to them, laughing as he did, jumping into Maxwell’s arms which caused the older man to stumble back a bit as caught the boy. Kara stood to the side of him with a watery smile as she took in the scene, watching Maxwell softly brush his hand through Max’s soft brown hair; it only had a hint of blonde in it that she could see. Max grinned over to her, his blue eyes bright with happiness to be back with his parents. She wasn’t sure who Max looked like more, he seemed to have taken after both of them equally.

“Can we go home Mommy?” Max asked, leaning against the man he believed was his father.

Kara’s heart broke again at the thought of what Max had lost – he might not know it, and they weren’t sure if or how they would tell him exactly what happened, maybe when he was older, but he lost so much. His home, his parents, his family. But they were going to try to give him everything he deserved… including a loving family – maybe not exactly how he remembered it, but hopefully close enough. She glanced up to look into Maxwell’s eyes and the same heartache in his eyes as she knew was in hers.

“Yeah, sweetie, we’re going home.”

The memories of Max’s home J’onn could see was an apartment similar to Kara’s own loft, but larger as if they had combined two (or more) of the lofts into one. Maxwell wanted to dismiss the idea of going to her place, his apartment was larger and had more than enough room for all three of them, but J’onn had stated it would be too different from what Max was used to. So in the end, they found themselves in a slightly altered version of Kara’s loft. James and Winn had done some shopping earlier while they were all at the DEO and managed to make her place a little more child friendly.

Her artwork that usually in the corner was now put away in a closet and a toychest stood in its place and one of the bookshelves was now full of children’s books. More stuffed animals than she’d seen in a long time seemed to have been propped up on the couch and on the little toddler bed that now appeared in a corner of her living room. Kara could spot child locks on various drawers and cabinets, which she didn’t think was quite right, but she’d look into what was later. She was already itching to call Eliza for help as well.

Once she set Max down on the floor, he took off running towards the bed, checking out each and every stuffed animal and letting them greet his stuffed cat he called Streaky, an orange tabby that looked well worn already but was clearly his favorite.

“He seems to be taking this fairly well,” Maxwell said, glancing around the apartment. “I guess J’onn was right.”

“Yeah, he doesn’t even seem bothered that his bed is in the living room.” Kara said softly so Max couldn’t hear them, “Did you want a glass of wine?”

“Sure, guess congratulations are in order for us.” Maxwell answered with a weary grin, joining her in the kitchen part of the loft, enough that he could still watch their ‘son’. He’d seen a lot over the years, but this was topping the chart of unpredictable. Never in a million years would he have expected him and Supergirl would reproduce – he believed in the theory of alternate universes long before the Supergang discovered the Flash – but this? This he’d never have predicted no matter how attractive he found Kara.

“I always wanted a family,” Kara admitted quietly as she poured their glasses, glancing over to check on Max who’d had just run over towards the toychest to pull out the toys there. She handed him the glass, and smiled sadly at him. “I didn’t think I’d ever really have one.”

Maxwell nodded in understanding, moving his body to face her. He leaned back against the island, and took a large sip of the wine. It was cheaper than anything he’d have purchased, but he didn’t care, it had a good enough taste. “Honestly, I didn’t either. I’m usually always working, and people who want to date me usually want one thing or another.”

“Let me guess, your money?” Kara asked, leaning against the sink, opposite of him and taking a sip of her own glass. “I guess, my own reasons were mainly who could I trust with my secret and still love me. And we didn’t even know if it was possible if we could… uh, you know.” Kara said, her face flushing at the thought.

Unable to stop himself, Maxwell smirked as he took in her flushed face. “I guess we know now.”

“Daddy can you read me and Streaky a story!?” Max shouted from the couch, he held up a book – waving it back and forth at him with a large grin.

“Of course,” Maxwell agreed quickly, his lips turning into a real smile as he took in the sight, setting the glass down and strides quickly to him.

Kara couldn’t help the warm feeling she felt as she watched Maxwell sit down and gathered Max in his lap and the book in his hands. Max leaned back against Maxwell’s chest and pulled Streaky into his own chest, looking at the pictures as Maxwell read the book out loud. And for the first time since they found out about Max’s parentage, Kara thought maybe they could actually do this. Maybe they could be a family for Max. Maybe not exactly as it was in his memory, not with their current history behind them, but maybe they could become closer – friends even. Instead of just allies or frenemies at best.

It’s bedtime before long, and Max had passed out while Maxwell was reading the second book, mostly due to the very exhaustive long day he had. They both tucked him and Streaky into the toddler bed before moving towards Kara’s bedroom. There wasn’t much privacy between them and Max, due her bedroom part of the loft being split by wall on one side and a large floor-to-ceiling curtain on the other side, with no door between them. So they would have to share her bed incase Max woke up during the night. At least for now, until they could figure out what else they could do.

Even though she’d been expecting it since they decided on going to her place, Kara couldn’t help but feel nervous. She was going to have Maxwell Lord in her bed, maybe not in the way that would really make her blush, but there was still an intimacy of sharing a queen sized bed. There would be little room between them, if one or another moved towards the other side. She wasn’t sure what he would say or think if he woke up and found she was cuddled up to him during the night. Nor was she sure what she would say or do if he did it. She was oddly curious to know if he was bed hog, or if he’d prefer to be the big spoon or the little one. She’d never really thought of about him like that before, beyond thinking him obviously attractive. She’d never expected she’d be in this position though.

She’d almost wish for there to be an emergency that J’onn or Alex couldn’t handle so that she could escape this feeling of anticipation, but she also kind of hoped that they wouldn’t. She was going to have to get used to being this close with Maxwell, mainly for Max’s benefit, but Kara did feel oddly relieved that they wouldn’t be adversaries anymore.

“Knock, knock,” Maxwell said, his eyes closed as he opened up the bathroom door and Kara grinned up at him from the bed in amusement.

“Don’t worry, I’m decent,” Kara said, before gesturing to the bed. “Is that side okay? I didn’t think to check. I could always switch sides – or I could maybe get a blanket to put in the middle of the bed?”

The queen sized bed was smaller than the king he had in his own apartment, and while he thought they could probably fit a pillow or blanket between them, Maxwell didn’t think it was needed. He usually slept alone, but he rarely ever moved around in bed and usually kept to whatever position he fell asleep in. He shook his head at Kara’s questions and walked over to his side of the bed.

“This is fine, plus if Max comes in during the night, he’ll have enough room in between us,” Maxwell stated as he lay down underneath the blankets.

“Do you think that’ll happen?” Kara asked, scooting down underneath the blankets and turning to face him.

“He’s been through a lot, and maybe it won’t hit him tonight, but I remember having nightmares as a kid and running into my parents’ bedroom at night, and at that point I hadn’t been through as much as him so yes I think it’s a possibility.” Maxwell explained once he faced her and grinned at her. “Don’t worry; I usually keep to my side of the bed.”

Kara smiled at him, flushing at his words. “I should warn you Alex said I’m kind of a star fish.”

Maxwell chuckled, “It’s fine, as long as there are no sudden punches in the middle of the night if you realize it’s me and you’re still half asleep.”

Kara laughed, “I promise not to hit you Maxwell. You should be safe from me,” Kara promised softly, her chuckle fading as she starred at him – her face turning serious. “Thank you for being here with me.”

“I won’t abandon him,” the silent ‘and you’ Maxwell said in his mind as he studied her, her face seemed to brighten at his words. “We’ll figure out a longer game plan tomorrow or this weekend maybe – give him and us time to acclimate to each other before we make any large scale decisions beyond what we discussed today.”

Kara grinned at him, “Thank you.”

“Goodnight Kara,” Maxwell said, not wanting to acknowledge another thanks from her and shut his eyes. Of course he’d be there for his family – granted it wasn’t exactly his family but yet it is now.

“Goodnight Maxwell,” Kara whispered closing her eyes as well.

THE END.
