“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Eloise Bridgerton said out loud after reading the letter she received that morning. It’s been weeks since Cressida Cowper left London and had falsely taken credit for Lady Whistledown and humiliated herself in front of the ton. Weeks since she’d betrayed Eloise and her family, and Eloise had cut her out of her life.

She threw the letter down and moved towards the window, wishing she could forget Cressida’s words, or forget that that they even had several months of friendship. And she thought she had put Cressida and their friendship out of her head, throwing herself into siblings’ weddings and relationships. But she could not get Cressida out of her head.

‘I know there is nothing I could do to change your judgment of me, for it probably is the correct one. I have been selfish in my actions and I have betrayed your trust and friendship. I disappointed everyone but most importantly – I disappointed you. I am beyond words of how sorry I am, and I wish I could explain my actions more clearly but I do not think you would understand. You only met my parents that once, which might give some substance why I tried to find some independence from them. And in some ways I have… staying here with my aunt. However, I was jealous – jealous of your friendship and loyalty to Penelope. I wanted that more than anything, and I am sorry to have hurt you.

Yours,

Cressida’

The words ate at Eloise, knowing she too wished everything that happened had not. She had enjoyed spending time with Cressida a lot more than she ever thought possible. And Eloise would not admit this out loud, but she missed her. Her heart ached whenever she thought of the woman, and she did not understand why. She wanted to see her again, even if she knew she should not. Cressida had hurt her, why would it matter if they would meet again? What difference would that make?

THE END.
